Howard Gwynn Secures $429,999 Operation Ceasefire Grant to Combat Gun Violence in Newport News
Newport News, VA – Howard E. Gwynn, Commonwealth’s Attorney for Newport News, announces the successful acquisition of a $429,999 Operation Ceasefire Grant to tackle gun violence in the city. Under Gwynn’s leadership, the office prosecuted more than 600 firearm-related cases in 2024 alone, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to holding offenders accountable and reducing the prevalence of gun violence in Newport News. This critical funding underscores Gwynn’s continued commitment to public safety and innovative justice.
The grant, awarded through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, enables the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to strengthen its capacity to combat violent crime. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office worked with assistance of the Newport News Police Department to apply for the grant. Funds allowed the addition of a senior trial attorney and a victim services advocate, bolstering efforts to prosecute firearm-related offenses while providing comprehensive support for victims and their families.
“Gun violence tears apart families and communities,” Gwynn said. “This grant empowers us to continue delivering justice for victims while working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to address the root causes of crime. Newport News deserves to be a safe and thriving community for all residents.”
The Operation Ceasefire program is a multi-faceted initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through prosecution, community outreach, and law enforcement collaboration. Highlights of the program include:
- Enhanced Collaboration with Police: The Ceasefire Attorney works closely with the Newport News Police Department’s Aggravated Assault and Special Investigations Units, ensuring comprehensive case development and swift justice.
- Community Education: Outreach programs educate youth and community members on identifying warning signs of violence, fostering trust in law enforcement, and promoting pathways to safer choices.
- Victim Support: A dedicated victim services advocate provides resources such as increased law enforcement presence, relocation assistance, and enhanced home security measures, helping victims rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
This innovative approach not only addresses the prosecution of violent offenders but also prioritizes prevention and community healing. Gwynn’s commitment to Newport News remains steadfast, rooted in his decades-long dedication to justice and service.
But the Ceasefire Grant is not the only way that the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has been responding to gun violence. “In conjunction with our drug court, mental health court, and longstanding domestic violence prevention programs, this office continues to make our community safer,” said Gwynn.
“As someone born and raised in Newport News, I am deeply invested in the safety and well-being of our community,” Gwynn added. “This grant allows us to take bold steps toward reducing gun violence and building trust with those we serve.”
Howard Gwynn’s campaign for re-election emphasizes his roots in Newport News, his experience, integrity, and vision for a safer Newport News. Gwynn believes that Community Safety & Rehabilitation are not mutually exclusive. Strong communities are safe but also offer second chances. Effective justice means both holding offenders accountable and offering paths to a better future.
